NORTH STAR ADVENTURES

Cape Elizabeth Land Trust Paddle

On Saturday September 21st I had the pleasure of spending the morning with folks from the Cape Elizabeth Land Trust. We met at the launch at 10:00 AM. After hauling boats and gear to the water (thank goodness for wheels) we had a fantastic morning paddling on beautiful Great Pond.  Prior to launching we spent a little time talking about boat design and learning correct paddling technique.

We saw blue herons, kingfishers and turtles. It was a calm sunny day and the temperature was in the 70’s. We couldn’t have had a more peaceful and perfect morning for welcoming autumn. The quality of light and early fall colors gave everything a golden hue.

Great Pond is truly a gem. The depth and size of the pond make it a paddlers paradise. You will find no motor boats only canoes and kayaks. The trail from the parking area to launch area is a single track trail used by mountain bikes and hikers. If you live in the town of Cape Elizabeth, and are lucky enough, there is a lottery system for securing space on a boat rack near the water. Otherwise, I would suggest a sets of wheels or a couple strong friends to help you haul your boat to the water. Check out this link to learn more about the Land Trust.
